The Fortnite servers ARE down on 20.03.22 (US 03.20.22) due to scheduled maintenance in order to prepare the servers for the 20.00 patch update. Epic Games tweeted ahead of time that the servers would go down at 3 AM ET / 7 AM GMT with matchmaking being disabled thirty minutes prior.
Matchmaking was disabled at 3:30 AM ET. The Fortnite servers ARE currently down right now. As with all updates, Epic never state when the servers will be back up. However, for previous updates, the servers are usually back online an hour and a half after they were scheduled to go down for scheduled maintenance.
The Fortnite servers often go down whenever there is a major update for the game. This is done so that the developers can perform some maintenance as they apply the update.
