The franchise came into being with the first game which came way back in 2002, and it already has twelve titles in its kitty, with a thirteenth one gearing up for release on next-gen consoles.
There definitely was some complaining but not as bad as bf5 and 2042. The first game I remember there being a huge backlash for (and justifiably so) was EA star wars battlefront 2. They tried to make that a pay to win casino game and got crucified for it. I personally think that that is where a lot of these last 2 game backlashes stem from.
